Innovative ‘Puppy Prep School’ Emphasizes Safe Socialization Opportunities for Young Dogs
Canine Solutions’ Puppy Prep School Program provides early effective puppy socialization. Lack of positive early socialization predisposes puppies to anxiety and fear. This challenge faced by animal behavior professionals has been particularly exacerbated since March 2020. According to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, puppies can safely begin socialization ‘as early as 7-8 weeks of age.’ However, young puppies routinely miss key opportunities to expand their world view.
Dogs adoptions increased exponentially during the Spring and Summer of 2020! Unfortunately, isolated in their homes, most of those puppies met only their immediate families. As a result, those puppies and adolescent dogs missed vital opportunities to learn about the world around them. Our client base now shows dramatic increase in dogs with reactivity, fear, separation anxiety, and aggression.
Our Solution
Puppy Prep School helps families provide early socialization opportunities for their dogs! This is a structured, high-impact learning opportunity for puppies between 8 and 24 weeks. This program provides safe early socialization for young dogs. Additionally, our trainers identify and interrupt early stress related issues. Puppy Prep School is a 4-week, half-day, drop off service offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the DogSchool in Olathe, KS. Puppy Prep School touches on the necessary facets of early training. This helps owners of young puppies make the biggest gains for long term success. Our trainers provide exposure to a variety of novel visual, olfactory, tactile, and auditory stimuli. New stimuli are introduced in a low stress manner that helps impressionable puppies form a blueprint to deal with novel situations. Additionally, puppies expand their communication repertoire through play with other puppies of similar age. Upon occasion, puppies also play with well screened, healthy, behaviorally appropriate adult dogs. Potty training and resource guarding prevention are top priorities of the Prep School Program, as well.
