Separation Anxiety Training FAQ’s
Every dog is different. Some dogs who experience extreme anxiety could take several months to be able to leave them for short durations. Dogs with less severe cases may see improvement in as little as 3-4 weeks. Our separations anxiety packages are structured around 4 week programs to best facilitate new habit formation.
Again, each dog is different. Some dogs may not benefit from medication. Others may show a drastic reduction in the amount of time to required to form new behaviors with the addition of anti-anxiety pharmaceuticals. Often a combination of short and long acting anti-anxiety medications provide the greatest return on investment. This is a question we encourage you to discuss thoroughly with a Veterinary Behavior Specialist.
If your dog experiences panic associated with separation anxiety or isolation distress then the only way to reduce that stress is by suspending absences. This could mean that your dog goes with you, or to daycare, or stays with some other individual, so long as panic is not triggered.
We encourage you to lean on family, friends, and neighbors to coordinate a schedule that eliminates panic inducing absences. You could also consider paid services such as sitters or doggy daycares.
Our trainer will need to visualize your dog’s response to your absence. Surveillance systems such a Wyze are easy to install with a low subscription fee. Otherwise you maybe able to conduct your assessment using Zoom, so long as the trainer can see where your dog is while you are away.
Anxiety is a natural part of all beings with a nervous system. It’s what prompts us to action when we are alone, cold, tired, or experiencing any other form of discomfort. Learning to cope with anxiety is a skill set that can be developed over time so long as your dog is not experiencing periods of panic.
After the initial four weeks you and your trainer will determine whether the progress is satisfactory or more training exercises are needed. If you deem it necessary, additional 4 week training packages can be added for the rate of $975.
Puppyhood is the ideal time to prevent separation anxiety from developing in the first place. If you find that your puppy is displaying symptoms of anxiety when separated such as pacing, panting, drooling, excessive vocalization, or desperate attempts to get out from the kennel it is best to address these concerns before they escalate.
Yes, it is not possible to reduce separation anxiety using suppressive training techniques. Our trainers use positive reinforcement and gradual desensitization protocols to ensure that your dog learns new behaviors using peaceful, calming strategies.
