BOARDING SCHOOL

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Boarding School is an add-on service that compliments our private training coaching packages!  All clients must complete an Initial Consultation prior to boarding and enroll in a private training package to supplement your boarding school experience.

Q: WHAT DOES MY DOG LEARN?

A: Boarding School curriculum is personalized for each dog and their specific needs.  For puppies, our general focus is Potty training, Socialization, and Resource Guarding Prevention.

For older dogs an Initial Consultation is required to ensure that we have a clear understanding of what you desire and you have a realistic expectation of what we can accomplish.

For high anxiety dogs our main focus is typically decompression and management to ensure that they maintain positive progress according to your training plan.

Q: HOW EFFECTIVE IS BOARD AND TRAIN AND DO YOU GUARANTEE THE OUTCOME?

A: Board and Train have the best outcomes for fast tracking potty training, for young dogs who are learning their basic obedience or dogs undergoing a behavior modification program and owners are needing to board them regardless.  A short intensive stay will not result in a complete resolution of behavior problems or a fully trained dog and progress can be quickly lost if the household doesn’t maintain the training once the dog returns home.

Training programs are also impacted by the stress level of your dog.  If you dog is generally anxious please send them with a calming supplement or we can add a package to your account at your request.  If your dog is overweight please plan accordingly to bring them to an appropriate weight prior to their stay as stress can significantly reduce your dog’s appetite.

Q: WHERE DOES MY DOG STAY?

A: We are committed to setting your dog up for success.  Your dog will be housed at our family home in Spring Hill, KS in our dedicated low distraction ‘Dog Room’ which has direct access to a fenced yard.  When not in training or socializing, each dog stays in their own wire kennel that it appropriate to their size and training goals.  If your dog is social they will be placed in appropriate play groups with dogs of similar temperament.  Puppies routinely receive socialization from our 3 young girls and older dogs will be incorporated into the household as their behavior and training progress allows.

Q: IS BOARD AND TRAIN SAFE FOR PUPPIES?

A:  Board and Trains generally have the best training outcomes for puppies.  The American Veterinary Society for Animal Behavior recommends beginning training for puppies once they have received at least one round of the Parvo/Distemper combination vaccine.  Because of our low volume the risk of communicable disease is significantly reduced than standard boarding facilities but sending your dog to doggy camp is similar to sending your kids to daycare.  Although the potential for your dog to develop GI upset due to general boarding stress, respiratory infections, or papilloma is small we cannot eliminate the possibility altogether.  Therefore it is incredibly important to send your dog at an appropriate weight, with high quality food, and calming supplements if warranted.

Q: WHAT IS THE METHODOLOGY USED IN TRAINING?

A: Canine Solutions uses only Positive Reinforcement Training techniques when working with your dog.  We will not use choke chains, prong collars, or electric collars during your dogs stay or recommend these tools at any point during your training program.

Clickers are routinely utilized during boarding school and your dog’s entire meal ration will be distributed through hand feeding during training exercises or through enrichment toys.  We highly suggest maintaining this approach once your dog is back home with you.

Q: WHAT DO I BRING FOR MY DOG?

We provide kennels, bedding, and enrichment toys like stuffed kongs.  If your dog is not on any medications then all you need to send with your dog is food and chews for kennel time.  If you would like us to add on chews for your dog during their stay please indicate this at drop off.  We carry Beg and Barker brand Jerky chews.

Please label all food and treat bags with your dog’s name.  Keep your food scoop at home!   Many dogs stress during boarding so a calming supplement is highly recommended.  We carry Composure and Edibites CBD treats.

Q: HOW SHOULD I SEND MEDICATIONS?

A: Please send their first week of meds pre-sorted in a weekly pill sorter, labeled AM/PM.  Send just enough meds for their entire stay plus 1-2 additional doses in case your return plans are delayed.  If your dog is on a restricted diet please send 1-2 cans of wet food per week for the administration of medications and powders.

Q: HOW ARE RESTRICTED DIETS HANDLED?

If your dog is on a restricted diet please let us know that on your registration form.  Send allowable high value treats and an allowable broth that we can add to their kibble to incentivize them during training.  Please send 1-2 cans per week of canned wet diet for stuffing enrichment toys.

We will do our absolute best to ensure that your dog only consumes his or her own food but we can not guarantee that they won’t find scraps here and there.

Q: CAN YOU PICK UP OR DELIVER MY DOG?

A: Absolutely!  Please indicate you would like concierge service at the time of scheduling.  We can pick your dog up from your home or drop them so that they’re waiting for you at home when you arrive.

If your dog has any appointments that you would like to keep while you travel we can accomodate this, as well. However, if your dog is simply due for vaccinations we ask that you schedule this at least one week prior to drop off or wait until after they go home.

Current concierge charge is $25/one way.

Q: CAN I GET A REFUND?

A: Because of our limited volume and high demand, particularly during holidays, a 50% deposit is due at the time of booking.  For cancellations with more than a week’s notice, a full refund will be issued.  For stays cancelled with less than a week’s notice the balance will be credited to your account to use for future training services.

In order to get the most out of your dog’s boarding school a private training follow up package is required.  In this manner we will ensure that you know how to maintain fedgling behaviors once your dog is back home with you.
